Pretexts for painting
The Still Life
15th November – 31st December
2003

Giorgio Morandi
Still Life (1958).
Oil on canvas, 25.5x30 cm |
This exhibition fits in almost
casually into the ambit of the major show which has just closed at the
Palazzo Strozzi on the Italian Still Life from Caravaggio until the 1700s,
and in a certain way, leads on from it perfectly.
It definitely carries forward the theme of this pretext for painting:
a depiction of objects, fruit, game etc, which allows the artist the
chance to imbue lifeless objects, immobile in their splendour with his
own feeling, with his very own poetry.
The show opening in our space in Florence spans the whole 20th century,
but gives special attention to artists who worked in the first half of
that century, from Morandi to de Pisis, from Carrà to Soffici,
from Casorati to de Chirico. The paintings on display are of extremely
high quality and have been chosen and presented in the catalogue by Luigi
Cavallo.
