MAURO STACCIOLI
“His forms challenge the force of gravity: spheres, circles, triangles, squares and rectangles respond directly to the precise historical and geographical context of the place they are designed for”. Mostly produced on commission, the monumental sculptural pieces appear as discreet presences, unexpectedly placed in urban or natural surroundings, or in closed spaces. The surroundings are in harmony with these “interventions” (intervention-sculptures, as the artist defines them) “which gracefully alter the perception of space and improve one’s awareness of the surroundings”. For Staccioli, sculpture is an art which “no longer finds its function as decoration or as a controlled and self-referential form; sculpture presents itself as the opportunity to reflect critically and its aim is to establish revitalizing relationships between ourselves and the world… to create sculpture is to be in a place, to possess it, to feel it envelope you completely”. The osmosis between the work of art and its surroundings and the precise execution of elementary geometrical forms which are “enriched by sensual colours and particular surfaces, allow the artist to construct giants which are not invasive, but whose simple forms and the sense of imbalance which sustains them, melt elegantly into the surrounding space”.
