“[...I] took photography to be my primary medium and sphere of investigation in the middle of the 1960s. For me it didn’t mean leaving behind the terrain of graphics or painting to enter that of photography and then limit myself to a new specific field. It’s also important to say that proposing photography in the figurative arts was not so obvious then as it was to become in the 1970s.” Ida Panicelli, La Fotografia di Luca Patella 1964-1978, Mantova, 1978
Luca & Rosa alla Calcografia nazionale di Roma nel 1966

“[...] I preferred photography and film at that time, and considered it fundamental; but I was never so naïve as to believe that the photographic sign (or in particular the photographic icon) and proceeding with the inherent tools were a truer approach to reality; even though it’s evident that a very different and more ‘direct’ likeness could be achieved.” Ida Panicelli, La Fotografia di Luca Patella 1964-1978, Mantova, 1978

L.M. Patella all’inaugurazione della sua Antologica al CSAC di Parma, 1977

Since 1964, in his multimedial works, amongst which the Ambienti proiettivi animati, even before the emergence of conceptual and behavioural art, Patella develops a linguistic experimentation that affects every aspect of his production, from his psychoanalytical altered colour photos in a realist context, to his performances, and his use of words as the holders of new meanings. His stance is openly subjective, existential even, a true sacrilege at a time when, both in Europe and above all in the United States, a reductionist, fundamentally tautological art was asserting itself, based on steely and insurmountable rules. Alberto Fiz, NON OSO OSO NON essere, Gli Ori, Pistoia, 2017
Luca si “riflette nella Psyche", 1970

"Having abandoned not just the science lab but also drawing and engraving, I went on to use and build the camera as a concrete expressive and not solely “artistic” means of expression. However, this did not mean burning bridges with Historical Tradition: the size of my works always corresponds to their complexity, which implies dialectically mediating between opposites." Ilaria Bernardi, NON OSO OSO NON essere, Gli Ori, Pistoia, 2017

Luca & Rosa, (pragmàtica della Comunicazione!), 1967
