Il Ponte continues the exhibition season with a monographic show dedicated to Ryu Iseup, a Korean artist presented for the first time in Italy. The exhibition features the last works by him, in which the material construction beneath the surface of the brightly colored and essentially monochrome painting becomes an essential element of his expressive modality.
“I seek to broaden the field of expression by bringing the material of sawdust into the realm of my painting in order to express the emotions felt and accumulated in nature through painting.
During my time in Paris, I worked on the project that explored abstraction, color, and corporeality using Hanji (traditional Korean paper, made with mulberry bark) thin and absorbent, and this work continued for several years upon my return to Korea.
After that, the material called sawdust, which started to be newly imprinted by chance, became an opportunity to move my work toward more essential questions and explorations.
Sawdust from nature is an insignificant and poor material in modern industrial society that is left after meeting the needs of our lives, However, it is also a material that encapsulates the complete essence of nature’s emotions.
Mixing sawdust with paint and medium and other elements, and spread on the canvas, it generates traces, materials and colours that transform into a new pictorial universe, capable of fully restoring the sensitive vibration of nature”. (Ryu Iseup, 2023)
